April 3, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
This month’s book club will entail a discussion surrounding Therese Anne Fowler’s Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.
Based on true events, Fowler’s novel illustrates the impassioned and reckless love shared between Zelda Fitzgerald and her husband, the indelible writer of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Zelda Sayre, a beautiful, “ungettable” Southern belle falls for Francis Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918. She is seventeen years old, and he is a young Army Lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Scott is neither wealthy, nor is he even a Southerner; yet, Zelda is insistent that his writing will bring him fame and fortune.
Sure enough, Fitzgerald sells his first novel, This Side of Paradise, and Zelda moves north to marry him. The seemingly endless champagne begins to flow, and the parties of Gatsby-like proportion never stop. And what follows is a story about helpless love, fame, jealousy, and insanity. This is Therese Anne Fowler’s imaginative take on America’s first celebrity couple.
