World Above Poetry Night Welcomes Grisel Acosta & Vincent Toro

On Wednesday, January 25th at 7pm the South Jersey Poets Collective welcomes Grisel Y. Acosta and Vincent Toro as featured readers to World Above Free Poetry Night at Stockton University’s Noyes Arts Garage (2200 Fairmount Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401).

The evening starts with the usual Open Mic, where participants read one poem that is less than two minutes long. The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, featured poets Grisel Y. Acosta and Vincent Toro will read.

Grisel Y. Acosta is an assistant professor in the English Department of Bronx Community College-CUNY. She received her Ph.D. in English—Latino/a literature from the University of Texas at San Antonio and has presented and published her creative and scholarly work in England, Colombia, Spain, and throughout the United States. Her creative work is in In Full Color: A Collection of Stories by Women of Color, Love You Madly: Poems About Jazz, Nineteen Sixty Nine: An Ethnic Studies Journal, Voices de la Luna, MiPoesias, Pembroke Magazine, Private International Photo Review, ¡Tex! Magazine, the NAACP Image Award nominated Check the Rhyme, Chicago’s After Hours Magazine, and the forthcoming Basta!: 100 Latinas Write on Violence Against Women and The Reproductive Freedom Festival Anthology.

Vincent Toro is the author of Stereo.Island.Mosaic., which was awarded the 2015 Sawtooth Poetry Prize. He is a recipient of a Poet’s House Emerging Poets Fellowship, a NYFA Fellowship in Poetry, and the Metlife Nuestras Voces Playwriting Award. Vincent has an MFA in poetry from Rutgers University and is a contributing editor for Kweli Literary Journal. His poems have been published in The Buenos Aires Review, Codex, The Acentos Review, The Caribbean Writer, Rattle, The Cortland Review, Vinyl, Saul Williams’ CHORUS, and Best American Experimental Writing 2015. He teaches at Bronx Community College and is a poet in the schools for The Dreamyard Project.
