Fake news is nothing new. As early as the 6th Century, officials were churning out misinformation to discredit the Emperor. In 18th Century London, scandal sheets printed gossip to manipulate public opinion. But in the age of the Internet, today’s government-endorsed fake news could have wider reach and implications.
