World Above Welcomes Joel Dias-Porter

On Wednesday, July 19th at 7pm the South Jersey Poets Collective welcomes Joel Dias-Porter as the featured poet to World Above Free Poetry Night at Stockton University’s Noyes Arts Garage (2200 Fairmount Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401).

The evening starts with the usual Open Mic, where participants read one poem that is less than two minutes long. The break will occur just before 8pm, and participants will return to a free take-home writing prompt, introduced by the host or the prompt’s author. Then, Joel Dias-Porter will read.

Joel Dias-Porter (aka DJ Renegade) was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and was the 1998 and 99 Haiku Slam Champion. His poems have been published in Time Magazine, The Washington Post, POETRY, Mead, The Offending Adam, Best American Poets 2014, Callalloo, Ploughshares, Antioch Review, Red Brick Review, Asheville Review, Beltway Quarterly and the anthologies ResistingArrest, Gathering Ground, Love Poetry Out Loud, Meow: Spoken Word from the Black Cat, Short Fuse, Role Call, Def Poetry Jam, 360 Degrees of Black Poetry, Slam (The Book), Revival: Spoken Word from Lollapallooza, Poetry Nation, Beyond the Frontier, Spoken Word Revolution, Catch a Fire, and The Black Rooster Social Inn. In 1995, He received the Furious Flower “Emerging Poet Award.” Performances include the Today Show, SlamNation, on BET, and the film Slam.
