Powder day for the bees at South Jersey hop farm Timberline Farms. The powder (sugar) is to test for mites. “You shake a cup of bees in the sugar and the mites fall off without hurting the bees. The mite count determines if you need to treat the whole hive with a mite killer. Varroa mites are a big part of colony collapse,” says Timberline’s Kelly. Photo taken by Joe @joekalucki.
